ARCHIE Pain Management Nurse
The ARCHIE Specialist Nurse in Pain Management is expected to start in post Spring 2010.
The ARCHIE Foundation has recently agreed to fund the first ever ARCHIE Nurse within the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital to allow for the development of an enhanced level of pain management for local children.
Currently, all staff involved in a child’s care have a responsibility to manage any pain being experienced but the appointment of an ARCHIE Specialist Nurse in Pain Management will allow this area of care to be enhanced and for other staff within the hospital to develop their own skills too.
Dr Graeme Wilson of the Department of Anaesthesia at the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital proposed the appointment in partnership with the Head of Nursing and the ARCHIE Board agreed this extra appointment would make a real difference to the care of local children.
Speaking about the new ARCHIE Specialist Nurse in Pain Management Dr Wilson commented that “as a specialist children’s hospital, we are involved in the day to day care of both routine and emergency children’s surgical services.”
“All children require appropriate management of their pain, in a manner appropriate to the procedure they have undergone. There are also a large, and growing, number of non-surgical patients who have pain problems, requiring either short or long-term review.”
“This specialist service which is now available thanks to support from the ARCHIE Foundation will allow us to provide even better care and a more individually tailored package of support for these children. There is no question that this appointment will make a huge difference in these children’s lives”.
