Specialist Cot is 'Life Changing'
ARCHIE makes ‘life changing’ donation to local care centre
The ARCHIE Foundation has purchased a special cot for use in a Deeside Respite Centre that will make a ‘life changing’ difference for local children.
The Specialist Cot, which cost almost £10,000, allows Aberdeenshire Council to extend the respite care services they have available for children with complex needs and has recently been given to the Highfield Respite Centre in Banchory.
Short breaks, or respite care, for children and young people with disabilities encompass a wide range of short-term services in Aberdeenshire. The purpose is to provide a break which is a positive experience for the child with care needs, allowing them opportunities to develop autonomy and independence.
Short breaks also give family carers a rest from their caring duties. It is important that these breaks have a positive outcome for both those with care needs and their carers.
The ARCHIE Foundation is the official charity of the Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital and Community Based Child Health throughout Grampian, Orkney and Shetland. David Cunningham, Director of Fundraising at the ARCHIE Foundation, commented:
“We know that good quality respite care can be life changing for the child involved. The ARCHIE Foundation is therefore delighted to make a difference for local children with very complex needs by providing this specialist piece of equipment to the Deeside Community. This new cot is absolutely in-keeping with our aim to support children in their own community as well as in the Children’s Hospital and we hope it will make a very real difference for local families.”
Paula Fern, Respite Manager at Highfield added:
"Highfield Respite Service welcomes the donation of the multi user cot from the Archie Foundation, and it has already become known as the 'Archie Bed'!”
“Without this donation Highfield would not be able to offer valuable short breaks to families of children with complex multiple disabilities where sleeping in a standard bed is an extreme hazard."
The ARCHIE Foundation receives no government or NHS funding and instead is wholly supported by donations from the local communities of the north east of Scotland.
