Medium Grants
Medium Grants are those up to £500 and are approved by the Director of Fundraising under guidance laid down by the Board of Trustees.
Staff apply for Medium Grants for numerous reasons although it is often specific to a particular child who requires something very specialist. Medium Grants are often also used to support additional training and staff development over and above that which is available through the NHS.
Funding decision is usually made within 48 hours of receipt of application and a total of x grants have been made to staff and individual children in 2009 totalling £x.
Small Grants
Small Grants are usually less than £100 in value and are made up from the small donations which come in via the wards and departments.
These gifts, usually £10 or £20, are usually restricted for the use of the ward or department they are given to and staff access them with the permission of the ward sister or department manager. As of the end of September 2009, we have made a total of 67 small grants this year in almost every part of the hospital.
Projects and Appeals

ARCHIE funds numerous projects every year and this will hopefully give you a taste of the range of projects we support.
ARCHIE projects fall into three different categories within the Children’s Hospital and Community based Paediatric teams. Our Large Grants are approved for projects after careful scrutiny by our Clinical Advisory Committee and then the Board of Trustees.
Our Medium Grants are approved by the Director of Fundraising and allow quick access to funds up to £500. Decisions are made with guidance from the Board and these projects are reviewed quarterly by the Clinical Advisory Committee.
Small Grants are typically up to £100 and are authorised by ward sisters and department managers for the urgent purchase of individual items often out of normal hours.
Summary of Current Appeals
Project: G-MED Upgrade
Target: £250,000
Summary: Can you help us to enhance the environments in all eight G-MED centres throughout Grampian (Elgin, Peterhead, Fraserburgh, Aboyne, Stonehaven, Turriff, Aberdeen and Huntly) to create more child friendly facilities? Arriving at a G-MED centre in the middle of the night can be scary for young children and stressful for all involved. We're working in local communities to improve these facilities for local children.
Project: Specialist Nurse for Children’s Pain Management
Amount: £150,000 over 3 years
Summary: Can you help us fund a specialist nurse to provide an enhanced level of pain management for local children and to provide in-house training for existing staff? This service is not a 'core' function of the NHS but we know it will make a huge difference for local children with chronic pain problems. We'll not only get a specialist nurse but we'll get someone who can 'up-skill' the other nurses so that all our children get an even better level of care. You can make a real difference by donating to support this appeal.
Project: ARCHIE Family Support Worker
Amount: £30,000 per annum
Summary: When a child is sick, it is an incredibly difficult time for all the family. The ARCHIE Foundation provide a suite of rooms allowing mum and dad to stay close to their sick child. However we need your help to maintain the provision of a family support worker, based in the ARCHIE Parent Accommodation Suite, to enhance the care and support available for a sick child's family. The total cost of this service is £30,000 every year. Please help if you possibly can to make a real difference for sick children - and their families.
Project: Play Specialists
Amount: £20,000
Summary: There is a dedicated team of play staff in the hospital who use play as a means of therapy and entertainment to keep children calm and happy whilst in hospital. Getting a seriously sick child to smile and laugh can be hard work - but hugely rewarding. The ARCHIE Foundation need to raise almost £20,000 every year to keep this team working. We fund musical concerts, face painting sessions, pottery classes, magician's visits, art workshops and much, much, much more! If you would like to get involved in funding some of this work, please get in touch!
Project: Young People’s Department, Royal Cornhill Hospital
Amount: £45,000
Summary: Children and Young People's mental health is often a 'taboo' subject. People prefer not to think about it - but we have to so that we can help make the difference for local children with mental health illnesses. In the Young People’s Department at Royal Cornhill Hospital there is a fantastic team supporting our local children. However, the facilities are not up to the task and the ARCHIE Foundation is currently planning to redevelop them to create a positive, child focused environment that will help remind these children that we do care about them and that we will be there for them. Please, if you can help in any way with this important work, contact us to make a donation.
